Find Which Users Are Connected to a Windows (SMB) Share

Whether you attempting unsuccessfully to gain exclusive access to a file, trying to delete a Windows share, or are simply curious as to a share’s current usage, the time can (and probably will) come when you would like to view which users are connected to that share at that moment.

While there are many networking utilities (shareware, freeware, etc.) that may perform this task to satisfaction, there is no need to install third party software to do so.

Windows NT and 2000 Servers install with the Server Manager included by default. The Server Manager was a much used tool in the Windows NT days; however, many IT professionals are unaware that the Server Manager application exists in Windows 2000 Server ®. The Server Manager gives an administrator the ability to view and modify such configurations as:

  1. All current user sessions on the server.
  2. Which directories the server is sharing (and under what name they are being shared).
  3. Resources currently in use, what the resource is being used for (read or write), and if a File Lock is present on that resource.
  4. Replication information.
  5. Administrative alerts.
  6. Who is connected to a particular share

Windows 2000 and 2003 Servers install with the “Computer Management” Microsoft Management Console ® Snap-in included by default. The Computer Management Snap-in gives admins access to configurations and information such as:

  1. Shares (names of existing shares, local share paths, share comments, etc.)
  2. Sessions (users connected to the server in general, how long they have been connected, how many files they have open, etc.)
  3. Open Files (which files are open by remote users, which remote user has that file open, what open mode the file is in [read, read+write], and if the file is locked for editing).

Who’s Connected To My Share?

Windows NT / 2000

  1. Open the Server Manager
    1. Windows NT -- Click Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Server Manager
    2. Windows NT / 2000 -- Click Start > Run, type “srvmgr” (without the quotes).
  2. Double Click on the name of the computer on which you would like to view open shares.
  3. Click the “Shares” button
  4. Highlight the name of the share to view the users connected to that share, the amount of time they have been connected to the share, and if the share is currently in use by that user.

Windows 2000 / 2003

  1. Open the Computer Management MMC ® Snap-in
    1. Click Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Computer Management or Click Start > Run and type “compmgmt.msc” (without the quotes).
  2. Expand “Shared Folders”
  3. Highlight “Open Files”. This displays what files are in use by remote users, and what user has the file open.
