Enable Auditing of Print Jobs on Windows 2000 SMB Shared Printers



For General Print Auditing:

  1. Go to the printer configuration (Start > Settings > Printers).
  2. Click on File > Server Properties > Advanced Tab
  3. Check the boxes next to which events you would like to log (such as Log spooler error events, Log spooler warning events, and Log spooler information events).
  4. This information can be viewed in the System Event Log.

For Detailed Print Auditing:

  1. Go to the printer configuration (Start > Settings > Printers).
  2. Right click on the printer you would like to audit, and click Properties.
  3. Click the Security tab, click on Advanced, and then click on the Auditing tab.
  4. Click Add, and then choose which users or groups to audit. Click OK.
  5. Choose which actions to audit (possibly only Print and Read). Click OK 3 times.
  6. If you receive the warning "The current Audit Policy for this computer…" you must turn auditing on for this machine. Use the following steps:
    1. Go to the control panel. Double Click Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy.
    2. Go to Audit Object Access, and check Success and Failure. Click OK.
  7. Auditing info can then be viewed in the Security Event Log.
