Basic ISA Server Setup

The following assumes a "Typical Installation" of a "Stand Alone" ISA Server. The ISA Server Enterprise Initialization was run, installing the ISA objects to active directory prior to ISA installation (this is an optional step for networks with one ISA server only).
The server was installed in Integrated Mode with a total cache size of 1024MB. The "To and From" Local Address Table (LAT) addresses entered during installation spanned the entire internal IP address space.
Remember, ISA Server, out of the box, will allow no incoming or outgoing traffic to the internet. Configuration is necessary to be able to use this product at all.

Note: The below described ISA Server configuration is NOT the most secure setup. The configuration outlined below is meant to be a base setup, enabling the most necessary ISA features, to which custom configurations can then be applied.

  1. Add the entry in the local domain table
    1. In ISA Management, Expand: Internet Security and Acceleration Server > Servers and Arrays > <servername> > Network Configuration
    2. Right Click "Local Domain Table (LDT)", Click New > LDT Entry...
    3. Click "Browse", select the domain name, and Click OK, OK.

  2. Create a Client Address Set (what addresses your users will come from).
    1. In ISA Management, Expand: Internet Security and Acceleration Server > Servers and Arrays > <servername> > Policy Elements
    2. Right Click "Clients Address Sets", Click New > Set.
    3. Type a name (possibly the name of the domain), and description for the set.
    4. Click the "Add" button, and type the beginning address, and ending address of all pc's to be affected by ISA's rules. Click OK.
    5. Click OK

  3. Create a Protocol Rule (The below example creates a rule that allows users access to all protocols. This is NOT the most secure configuration; however, it will allow users to access anything they may need).
    1. In ISA Management, Expand: Internet Security and Acceleration Server > Servers and Arrays > <servername> > Access Policy
    2. Right Click "Protocol Rules". Select New > Rule...

ISA Management - New Protocol Rule

    3. Type a name for your new rule (such as "Allow Everything")
    4. Leave "Response to client requests to use protocol:" as "Allow". Click Next.
    5. For this example, leave "Apply this rule to:" set as "All IP traffic". For a more secure configuration, choose "Selected protocols" and place a check next to any traffic that you will allow. Click Next.
    6. If desired, set a schedule for this rule (possibly "Always"). Click Next.
    7. You may specify "Any request", but it is recommended that you use the Client Address Set created earlier. Select "Specific Computers" and Click Next.
    8. Click "Add". Select the Client Set from the left panel, and Click the Add button. Click OK.
    9. Click Next, and Click Finish. Your rule should appear similar to the graphic below.

After configuring your client's browsers to use a proxy (use the name of the ISA server, and port 8080), your clients should be able to browse the internet. For information on how to configure your browser to use a proxy server, please see your browser's documentation.
