Upgrading from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000

Listed here are some simplified steps on how one may move from their old Exchange 5.5 server to a new Exchange 2000 box. Please pay close attention while using these steps to all Microsoft documentation involved, as every step plays it's part

  1. Back up Active Directory with NT Backup. Place the backup file on a separate medium.
  2. If your domain contains more than one DC, you may want to disconnect the second from the domain as an Active Directory backup in case a problem arises (optional).
  3. Build the to-be-Exchange-2000 server with Windows (2000 or otherwise) Server.
    1. Ensure SMTP and NNTP are installed on the server to run Exchange 2000
    2. Apply all Service Packs and Security Updates
  4. Promote the new server to a domain controller.
  5. Back up Active Directory with NT Backup.
  6. Install the Windows 2000 Support tools per MS Article 301423 HOW TO: Install the Windows 2000 Support Tools to a Windows 2000 Server-Based Computer.
  7. Run Netdiag.exe on the server to be running Exchange 2000 and all domain controllers per page 2 of 9 from MS Article 316886 HOW TO: Migrate from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server. If any issues are uncovered, repair and rerun Netdiag.
  8. Run DCDiag.exe on the server to be running Exchange 2000 per page 6 of 19 from Configuring Windows 2000 Active Directory for Exchange 2000 Server.
  9. Install the Active Directory Connector (from the Exchange 2000 CD) per pages 7 through 9 of 19 from Configuring Windows 2000 Active Directory for Exchange 2000 Server.
  10. Back up Active Directory with NT Backup.
  11. Configure the ADC Connection Agreement per MS Article 296260 How to Configure a Two-Way Recipient Connection Agreement for Exchange Server 5.5 Users. Replicate the Exchange objects to Active Directory.
  12. From the Exchange 2000 CD, run ForestPrep per pages 10 through 14 of 19 from Configuring Windows 2000 Active Directory for Exchange 2000 Server.
  13. From the Exchange 2000 CD, run DomainPrep per pages 14 through 16 of 19 from Configuring Windows 2000 Active Directory for Exchange 2000 Server.
  14. Install Exchange 2000
    1. Ensure the 2000 version of the Exchange 5.5 Administration tool is selected to install during Exchange 2000 setup.
  15. Install available Service Packs to Exchange 2000
  16. Create backup .pst files of Public Folders
  17. Migrate the Public Folders per pages 5 and 6 of 9 from MS Article 316886 HOW TO: Migrate from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server.
  18. Create backup .pst files of mailboxes (Important in case of problems in later steps)
  19. Migrate the mailboxes per page 6 of 9 from MS Article 316886 HOW TO: Migrate from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server. nbsp Note: We have successfully moved mailboxes while the user is logged in; however, it is safer to have the user logged out of the mailbox during the move. It is imperitive that the user not log in to their Exchange mailbox during the move.
  20. Reroute outgoing internet email through the Exchange 2000 Server per pages 6 and 7 from MS Article 316886 HOW TO: Migrate from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server.
  21. Configure the SMTP Virtual Server per MS Article 316886 HOW TO: Migrate from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server .
  22. Make MX change with Internet Service Provider to point to new Exchange server (this replication usually occurs very quickly).
  23. If applicable, reconfigure Outlook clients to not use Internet Mail accounts (actually, found to be optional; leaving the internet accounts, while unnecessary, is harmless in most situations).
  24. Testing phase (shut down the old Exchange 5.5 server for a while, and make sure everything is working).
  25. Power up the Exchange 5.5 machine for removal. Remove per pages 6 and 7 of the Migrate from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server document, paying special attention to MS Article 288150 HOW TO: Rehome Public folders in Exchange 2000 if you have not removed the replicas already.
  26. Convert from Exchange Mixed Mode to Exchange Native Mode per MS Article 327779 HOW TO: Convert from Mixed Mode to Native Mode in Exchange 2000 Server.

If you have any more suggestions on upgrading to Exchange 2000, or you feel a step should have been outlined differently, please feel free to contact us.
