How to Enable Out Of Office Replies to the Internet in Exchange 2000 Server

How to Troubleshoot Out Of Office Replies due to Incorrect Routing

Check the Out Of Office Replies selection box.

  1. Open the Exchange System Manager
  2. Expand > Global Settings
  3. Highlight “Internet Message Formats
  4. Right Click on the default domain (usually displayed as “Default          *”) and Click “Properties”.
  5. Click the Advanced tab, and check the box to “Allow out of office responses”.

To put the above settings into effect, you will then need to either restart the server, or restart the MTA Stacks and Routing Engine services (via the services.msc MMC Snap-In).

  1. Go to Start > Run
  2. Type “services.msc” (without the quotes).
  3. For the “Microsoft Exchange MTA Stacks” and “Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine” services, perform the following actions:
    1. Highlight the service
    2. Right Click the service and Click “Restart”, or Click the Restart Button at the top of the screen (small box and arrow icon).

If you are enabling Out Of Office replies on a new Exchange 2000 machine which is an upgrade to an older Exchange 5.5 box, you may incur issues with your Routing Table. This will cause Out Of Office replies to be sent from the Exchange 2000 Server to the Exchange 5.x server, but not to the Internet (appearing at first to fail to send altogether).

You may be able to detect this issue by sending an email from an internal domain member to another internal domain member who has Out Of Office turned on. To view where the Out Of Office message has come from, take the following steps:

  1. As stated above send an email from an internal domain member to another internal domain member who has Out Of Office turned on.
  2. When the Out Of Office reply is sent to the Sender’s is received, right click the email (right where it is in the inbox) and click Options to view the email headers.
  3. In the “Received: from by” lines, check for the presence of the names of both the new Exchange 2000 machine and the old Exchange 5.x machine.

If you believe you may be experiencing the issue described above, you may need to ”Reroute outgoing internet email through the Exchange 2000 Server per pages 6 and 7 from MS Article 316886 HOW TO: Migrate from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server.” (the previous line is an excerpt from the Upgrading from Exchange 5.x to Exchange 2000 How To Document).
